Terri Apter

Terri Apter is a psychologist, writer and Fellow Emerita of Newnham College Cambridge. Her books on family dynamics (mothers and teenage daughters, sisters, in-laws) have been published to great acclaim and translated into many languages (Chinese, Korean, Russian, Slovenia, Swedish, French, German and Spanish). Her book Altered Loves: mothers and daughters during adolescence was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year  and The Confident Child was awarded the Delta Kappa Gamma International Educator’s Prize.  Her most recent book, The Teen Interpreter, was selected as one of the 6 best parenting books by BookPage.  Her reviews and articles have appeared in the Guardian, the TLS, the Financial Times, the New York Times Book Review, and the Psychologist.  She is a regular blogger for Psychology Today, where her posts have accumulated more than 2.2 million views. Her work on raising children’s aspirations was presented the UK Treasury.  Her work on child development was presented to the Department of Education. She directed research into teen girls’ use of social media that was presented to the Secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in 2020 and showcased in Ofcom’s report Listening to Experts: Mental health and media literary (2023).

She lives in Cambridge, England where she combines writing, research, reviewing, ice skating and grandparenting four amazing grandchildren.
